Barack Obama is trying to undo Welfare Reform and raise taxes. Now I remember when Bill Clinton signed the Welfare Reform bill into law.
I am poor and as a poor woman I have both been on welfare (when I was young and I have been off welfare so long I have no years under the current law). The old welfare system you were not permitted to get married or you would lose your benefits. You were not permitted to work or you would lose your benefits. You were not permitted to earn a car or lose your benefits. Now you do not lose your benefits if you work. You lose your cash but then again once you work most poor people prefer the paycheck to the welfare check.
Poor women were slammed by Republicans for that but when you have a job that doesn't offer health care for you and your children then welfare looked damn good. They hated it. Welfare should be a temporary situation not a permenant solution.
